Our second event of the year! We will be returning to Scanlon Creek Conservation area.

It looks like it *won’t* be -20 degrees C this weekend, so that is a big plus for us all. However there is quite a bit of snow on the ground at Scanlon Creek Conservation Area near Bradford. The good news is that most (many) control points are adjacent to trails, which are largely runnable/walkable because others have been there. Do know that off trails the snow can be up to knee deep. I don’t think anyone will want to use snowshoes, but you can bring them for later if you like.

And I say that in part because this will be a relatively short O Cup compared to some recent events: those with the most handicap points will likely be completing around 3km distance, while those with a zero handicap may be completing up to 5.5 – 6.0 km distance. We’re aiming for a “photo finish” of folks across the genders, ages and skill levels!

Scanlon Creek is a hidden gem in the south end of Simcoe County. It’s relatively compact, a rectangular park bisected by a stream of the same name. There used to be a pond at the eastern end of the area, but that’s now been naturalized, making much of the creek “crossable” in the winter (your choice, though no route *has* to cross the creek). Also, these changes have necessitated some map updates, done by Ihor Palahnyuk circa 2015 and just now in 2026 by Andrew Bell. It is a work in progress, but every control location is (largely) correct and absolutely “fair.”

The swift will have the day, and then be encouraged (all of you please!) to hang out for a bit for some post race snacks and winning plus draw prizes. I guarantee an relatively warm day of winter fun at a special place near my home town, our first return here after quite a few years.

PS a new forest visitor centre is being constructed and is marked out of bounds, but doesn’t affect any route choices. Also, look out for forest birds, woodpeckers and more if you aren’t too noisy!

Thanks for choosing to come up to Bradford West Gwillimbury at a gem in the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority system!

Good luck,
